Cinnabar Boxes

Our traditional Chinese faux Cinnabar Boxes are hand crafted using a process similar to the art of hand carving Cinnabar practiced in China since 4000 B.C. The word Cinnabar is derived from the Persian word for 'dragon's blood', which is quite fitting given the importance of dragons and the color red in Chinese culture. In feng shui, the color red represents the fire element and symbolizes good luck, passion and strength.

Originally, Cinnabar was a pigment mined from Iron Ore quarries, but it contained highly toxic levels of Mercury, so it is no longer used to create gifts and jewelry. Today, Cinnabar resin is created from the purified sap of the Lac tree and is a completely safe, non-toxic reproduction of the famous bright red pigment treasured by China's great emperors.

Our Red Lacquerware Boxes are created by molding the safe, non-toxic Cinnabar resin around wooden forms to make a surface thick enough for carving. Then once the resin has cured, our Chinese Carved Lacquerware Boxes are individually and exquisitely hand carved by master craftsmen. Reminiscent of ancient artifacts, the rich, bright red vermilion color of our Carved Cinnabar Lacquers, Cinnabar Trinket Boxes and Cinnabar Jewlery Boxes are sure to bring a lovely touch of the Orient to your home or office!
